What I Learned While Covering a Child Sex Offender

October 4, 2015 By Kristine Lazar Leave a Comment

#ReportersNotebook

Last week, I did a story on a little girl who was (allegedly) sexually assaulted by a convicted child sex offender while she shopped with her family.

What struck me about this crime was that it happened right under her mom’s nose. Her mom wasn’t being careless or negligent. Her 9-year old was standing on the shopping cart she was pushing when it happened!

As we reporters-turned-moms tend to do, during the interview, I was immediately comparing how this family was similar to my own; I put myself in their shoes. We both have three kids, we both consider ourselves educated and cautious moms, and we both would never think that our children would be preyed upon by a convicted sex offender while we were just inches away.

I think the takeaway from this story is that it’s not just important for parents to watch their children, but children must be taught to speak up when someone makes them uncomfortable.

JURUPA VALLEY (CBSLA.com) – A convicted sex offender is back behind bars after being accused of groping a girl at a Jurupa Valley store over the weekend.

Orion Charles Hitches, 32, of Jurupa Valley is held on $1 million bail at Robert Presley Detention Center after being booked on three counts of child molestation-related charges.

The crime happened in the toys aisle at the Kmart in the 7800 block of Limonite Avenue about 12:30 p.m. Saturday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
